A cat show is where a group of cat enthusiasts go to show off their best cats.  Shows are also a way of promoting the different cat breeds and bettering them, which is the goal of every breeder there. They are also a  wonderful way to meet new friends, learn more about cats and  find some new cat accessories such as toys, food, cages, carriers and even cat fashions.

Cat shows are held on most weekends in larger cities at places such as civic or convention centers, or fair grounds buildings. Local cat clubs sponsor these shows by hiring the judges, funding a suitable location, advertising, arranging lodging, and providing awards. Cat show locations are advertised in cat magazines such as Cat Fancy and CatsThe cats are on display to cat show visitors before, after, and during judging.

Many of the cats cages, where she cats stay between judging, are elaborately decorated but some are plain such as this one.

Here two Cornish kittens wait for their turn to be judged.

Breed standards have been developed by various cat associations such as CFA, TICA, that describe what an ideal Persian, Siamese, Cornish Rex, etc. should look like. Professional judges, who are trained to be sanctioned cat show judges, select the cats that they feel best represent that cat's breed standard.

Here a judge is evaluating the head on this Cornish Rex

Each cat is evaluated by each judge at the show. There may be as many as eight different judges, so each cat has several chances to win.

Cats are shown in three major categories:

  • CATS Adults over eight months old.

  • KITTENS Cats four to eight months old. (Must be at least 4 months old to be shown.)

  • PREMIERS Cats that have been neutered or spayed.

There are a variety of titles a show cat can earn, such as Champion or Grand champion.  Show cats often have elaborate names that designate what cattery they are from.  Cattery names are registered and can be only used by the owner. Our registered cattery name is De's Cornex, of course

This is the kind of awards that cats can win at cat shows.

These were won by our Grand Champion Mykro's Gabrielle of De's Cornex in one year. She was the best Cornish Rex in our region in 1996.
